We found this article with great tips for home moms who need to get back into the job market after a work break. It can be hard to explain the gap in employment away, but it is not impossible!

The Stay-At-Home Resume Article Starts Here. It was originally published as Tips On Writing A Resume for Stay At Home Moms.

Experts in the field say moms reentering workforce are becoming more recognized as the hidden pool of talent they are, so don’t apologize for the gap.

Begin with a strong cover letter and the decision makers name in the salutation and talk about how you can benefit the company. According to Barbara Corcoron a successful businesswoman (The Corcoran Group a $5 billion business) employers form their initial opinion from the cover letter.

She advises you emphasize how the skills you learned as full-time administrator of you household – time management, budget management and volunteering will translate to workplace skills. If you organized an event you can write about it in terms of skills used – staff management, marketing, budgeting etc.

Don’t go with the chronological resume, use a summary of your skill sets you have acquired as stay at home mom. Barbara strongly advises no silly titles for yourself (ex. domestic godess).

End your resume with a short chronological section outlining your education, places, and dates of employment, and job titles. Also, add a sentence about what you’ve done while you have been out of the workforce. Example – 2001 to present: Full-time homemaker, PTO Treasurer, community volunteer.

Corcoron says by the time your prospective employer is done reading your resume they will be so impressed with your skill set and accomplishments, the employment gap won’t matter.

Freelance or Contract Writing

If you are looking for an “at home job“, do not overlook freelance work. Even though a contract job will not have benefits, you can make good money, find lots of clients, and keep a flexible schedule. Freelancing is not for everybody. But many freelancers I know started out doing it to tide them over between jobs, and then decided they loved the lifestyle and turned it into their full time business.

Who Wants to Write? Almost everybody I know has dreamed about writing in one form or another. And freelance writing can be very satisfying, as well as lucrative. In fact, one freelancer I know said she had joined writers groups because she dreamed of writing a book one day. As with many budding authors, the book never got written or published, but she still is happy to have found a way to get paid for writing!

How To Find Freelance Writing Jobs

It really isn't that hard to find this type of work at all, and even though many jobs are declining, the demand for freelance writers is actually increasing! Why? Internet sites need content, and many webmasters pay for articles. Also, as companies cut back on employees, they still need work done, and so they look for freelancers.

Freelancer Job Boards – These are quite popular all over the internet. You can find general job boards, and you can find job listings and websites that are devoted to freelance writers.

Webmaster Forums and Websites – Most websites that provide webmaster communities, like webmaster forums, will have a help wanted/jobs wanted section. You can find that section and post your services there, being careful to follow any set guidelines. You may want to offer a special price to the first couple of people who take advantage of your service in order to get a good reputation and attract new business. Some people have built a steady stream of business from webmaster communities, and others have actually gotten hired for full time jobs.

Writing Contents – You can also find writing contests that you can enter for publicity and cash prizes.

Start your ow blog or website – We have already discussed the advantages of having your own website. You can profit from it with sponsor ads. Or you can use it to showcase your work and the services you offer. Even if you look for work in other places, it helps to have a website for potential clients to review. If you do not have a lot of previous experience, your website or blog can be your online resume too.

Want more?

I'd be very happy to see your comments and questions. So sign up and post away!

There seems to be a demand for a series of suggestions for actual “jobs” that can be done from home, rather than home business opportunities. We are great fans of home business, no mistake! But being a home based business owner is not for everybody, and we understand that many people prefer the structure of an actual job from an employer who offers a set pay rate for the job that is done.

Alpine Access Work At Home Customer Service

One employer that has been noted a lot is Alpine Access Work From Home. Note that we are not affiliated with that company in any way. They do appear to fit the criteria for a legitimate work at home job provider, in that they do post requirements for employees, take job applications, etc. They want to recruit serious people who really want to work at job duties just as if they were in a real office, but just want to be able to do it from a home office.

Posted Job Requirements

Current opportunities require English speaking applicants, and some bilingual positions that include English are in particular demand. They also require some basic computer skills, like being able to use common word processing software. They also require a year of customer support experience, and applicants need to have some equipment like a phone and a computer with a high speed internet connection. Furthermore, this company expects their recruits to have a quiet “office-like” environment to work in. They do not want children crying or dogs barking in the background.

Perks, Pay, and Benefits

These are actuall work at home employee positions, and are not contract work. The company does provide training, which is done online, also from home. They also have full or part-time positions, but mention that most shifts could include some week-end work. Posted benefits include health and retiremen plans, and the opportunity to advance.

If you are serious about finding a work-at-home position, and are also serious about working, this may be a good company to check out.

Are there actual salared or hourly jobs you can perform at home?

When most of us think about being a home worker, we think of a business or profession where we can have a home office. But telecommuting employees are becoming much more common. Honestly, it is the most common for employees who get to work at home a few days a week, but also report to an office, employees who travel a lot and who can base their home office in any city, and for those in some sort of technical field.

But there are major companies who do hire real work at home workers. And you can find jobs you can perform without an special high tech skills too! Though, to be realistic, the more skills you can bring to the table, the more choices you will have.

Pay scales may be slightly lower than they are for those who report to an office, but when you consider the expense of clothes and commuting, it may work out beter for you. And sometimes the pay will not be affected at all.

What Kind of Home Based Hourly or Salaried Jobs Can You Get Wihout High Tech Skills?

Honestly, I hear about new types of jobs tha can be performed at home all the time. And of course, things like computer programming or web design are common and sort of obvious. But the point of this article is to move beyond those types of techie jobs!

Customer Service Reps – I hate to admit that I have been late on my cable bill (gasp) a couple of times in my past. I noticed that the nice lady who called me to remind me to pay called from her home phone, and not from the major cable company. She had been hired to collect bills, and had a work at home position.

I also noted that FTD is hiring customer service reps. for 1-800-FLOWERS.com I found that with a 5 minute Google search. I'm sure that a determined searcher can find a lot more real opportunities.

I also found a variety of firms that outsource customer service who were hiring home workers. Again, I hesitate to mention one or the other because I have not checked them out. But finding them is a simple search away.

Recruiters – Recruiting companies match job seekers with employers. The job involves a lot of phone work as you screen prospects, seek clients, and try to match them together. If this sounds like a good match for you, try a search on a Google or a major job board like Monster.

Sales – Many sales positions, either local or national, offer salaries plus bonuses. They do not require that sales people report into a home office every day, and some never require it. I know several sales people, who are employed by a home company, that get to work from home. They use their phone and emails for most of the work they do, but may need to leave home sometimes for sales call.

Lead Generation / Appointment Setters - Some professionals, like insurance agents or financial planners, hire phone lead generators to set appointments for them. You probably will have a prepared script and simply call from a list your employer provides you.

Virtual Assistants – If you can complete assignments through email, the phone, or fax, a virtual office assistant job may be for you! There are available jobs for a variety of skill levels, and of course, your salary will depend upon what types of work you can perform. Examples of at home office assistant jobs are data entry, legal forms, medical coding and billing, scheduling, setting appointments, travel arrangements, etc. So you can see that there are many positions to fit in with the skills of many types of people.

What Do You Need?

You will probably need to talk on the phone for some of these opportunities, so even if you have kids at home, you need a quiet place without baby crying or the dog barking. Most jobs will require a phone and computer with an internet connection. Some may require a fax machine, but these are pretty cheap to buy these days.

And even though you get to work from your home office (or kitchen table), some salaried or hourly jobs may require set hours. For instance, a phone customer rep would need to keep a schedule when he or she would be expected to answer the phone or make calls.

Some other opportunities may just require a certain amount of production, and do not require set hours. For example, you may be expected to set a minimum of 10 appointments a week, but can do it after dinner if that is the best time to call.

How to Find Real Work at Home Salaried Jobs

We plan to post a list of good places to look for home jobs in the future. It will take us some time to check out these resources, so we aren't wasting your time. For now, you can try a search on Yahoo, Google, MSN, or any major search engine. You can also look on the big job boards like Monster or Google.

Try to find real companies or outsourcing firms that offer this type of work. If you find ads that ask for an upfront fee to find you work at home jobs, be sure and check them out before you sign up. Real opportunities should not really charge you upfront. That is not to say all paid services are bad. Some charge a legitimate fee for their service. But we have also heard a lot of complaints about some.

We would love to hear from you! Be sure and post your comments, experiences, and suggestions!
