I am Mark, an insurance agent who works in a pretty large metro area – and actually my whole state. I do have a website, but would like to make it more productive. It's nice to have a website, and I do promote it with my business cards. But it really doesn't bring in a lot of new clients. I hear the same thing from lots of others, though I know that some agents have really made their website work welll.

Can anybody help?

Hi Mark,

I'll probably post more on this later. But when you get a website built for you, you did not get that website promoted. In other words, you are still competing with hundreds, if not thousands, of other insurance websites. It is important to figure out how to get visitors to find you out of all of the others. When you understand this, you have come a long way. This is one thing that many professionals do not understand about their websites though.

Online Website Promotion

You can learn how to do SEO (search engine optimization or PPC (pay per click) marketing. Or you can find somebody to pay to do this for you.You can also find places to submit articles which will allow you to link back to your website, but it helps if you do this according to a strategy that will help you in the long run. There may also be local online directories (hint: Yahoo Local) that can help you too.

To learn more, you can search for things like "website promotion", search engine optimization, etc.

Offline Promotion – Putting your website on your business card is, of course, a step in the right direction.

Anyway, I could write for hours about some things that would help, but I think this post should give you something to think about.

Hi,

I used to work with some insurance agents too. I know this website –  Insurance Leads Site - has some tips on marketing online for agents. I covers some website promotion ideas, plus ways to work with internet leads. Good luck!

OK – so I hate to ask a stupid question here – but how can a non-techie get started with SEO for their own websites? Any tips? Surprised

You can start right on this website with this article – Free Website Traffic Tips!

SEO consists of two main parts :

Onsite factors – Using key phrases and words in your domain name, title, headings, links, content etc. the right way.

Offsite factors – Getting links back to your website with the right text.

If you can understand these, you can get started. It is fairly simple to become a novice, and a lifetime's work to master, of course as things change all of the time! Like everything else, if it is worth doing, it is worth doing well!

You could also start with this article – SEO BASICS

Again, these articles are not meant to make you an SEO guru, but to get you started so you understand the field. In the resource section of the website, you can probably find some affordable firms to hire too.
