When times are tough, it is pretty easy to see how most families can benefit from having some type of work that can be done out of the house. A home business can help provide extra income, and in some cases, it can even replace the income from a lost job. Some people have founded cottage industries because they just want the flexibility, but others did it because they reallly needed to make some money with a low startup cost!

We posted about 5 Easy Home Business Ideas to get you to put on your thinking cap.  Some of these ideas are online businesses, while some can be done without touching a computer! Just be careful. While a down economy makes a home business more attractive, it also seems to attract all sorts of scammers. You may benefit from some instruction, but be sure and check out any pre-packaged business before you start getting involved and spending your time and money on it!

You may think that an economic downturn is a bad time to start something, but there are some increased during demands during hard times. If wives or caretakers need to go back to work, they may need child care or elder care during the day. Dogs need to get walked too. (Don't laugh. I know a lady who bought a beach house from the proceeds of her dog walking and pet sitting business after she grew large enough to hire employees). And houses will need to be cleaned.

Anything that you can do to help others reach their goals, free them up for other tasks, or save them money will be sure to be in demand when money is tight.

Hey Mar, nice idea for a website and post you have here! And I have observed an increase in cottage businesses during this downtime too.

I saw one study, done in New England, that suggested self employed people actually fared better than people with salaried jobs during the recession. And micro-businesses grew while employment declined.

At first this might surprise some because credit was so tight and consumers weren't spending. But some laid off employees may have turned to self employment or contract work because they could not find a salaried job, and entrepeneurs tend to be the type of people to thrive with their backs against the walll. Surprised

Hi, I just found this forum. Let me inroduce myself. I am a self employed insurance agent. I have to say that we small business owners may have some flexibility, or are will into accept some limits, that employed people won't or can't.

What do I mean? Well, when credit and money I got tight, I could make a choice to give up my $500 a month office and move back home. I had started out of my kitchen, and felt like I had arrived when I could afford my own office. But I'd rather step back, slash my expenses, then go broke or stop sending my kid tuition checks.

But since these days I can do so much of my business over the phone or through email, an office just isn't an absolute priority for me. And yeah, that 3 second commute is a big benefit!
